ZooAmerica officially kicks-off it's 100 Years celebration! Join us from 12:00 noon to 6:00 PM at the Zoo for special activities surrounding 100 Years of our Zoo in Hershey!
Founded in 1910 by Milton S. Hershey as Hershey Zoo, ZooAmerica will highlight significant animals throughout its 100-year history. ZooAmerica naturalists will talk about such "legacy species" as the American alligator, a specimen seen at the Zoo as early as 1913, at 1 p.m.; American black bears, the second animal acquired by Mr. Hershey, at 2 p.m.; black-tailed prairie dogs, the first animal at the Zoo, at 4 p.m.; and the American elk, which was believed to be Mr. Hershey's favorite animal, at 5 p.m.
During the black bear talk, guests also can see the Zoo's pair of bears, Butch and Sally, get a special treat in celebration of the Zoo's 100th birthday. The gift will act as an enrichment activity, which is designed to stimulate activity and encourage natural behavior while keeping Zoo residents happy and entertained.
The day-long event also includes animal encounters throughout the Zoo, a history talk at Black Bear Patio at 3 p.m. and a strolling barbershop quartet for musical entertainment.
In the early days of the Zoo, young visitors enjoyed taking pony rides. As a tribute to that part of the Zoo's history, K&B Stables is offering pony rides for $5 per ride.
Guests also can purchase food items that are specially priced for the celebration, including a $2 meal deal that consists of a hot dog, soda and bag of chips, as well as popcorn for 50 cents.
ZooAmerica North American Wildlife Park is an 11-acre, year-round, walk-through zoo that is home to more than 200 animals representing more than 60 North American species. Open daily, ZooAmerica prides itself on following its mission of conservation. ZooAmerica is celebrating the legacy and vision of its founder, Mr. Hershey, throughout the year.
